On Pornography

And why I don't care for most of it

I don't get porn. No, really I don't, or at least not porno movies and hardcore stuff. I fail to see the appeal of watching other people have sex. If you're in a situation that you have a partner who'd like to have sex with you, then go off and experience the real thing. If you're starved for sex but no one's willing to do it with you, then it seems really pathetic to watch others do it. Sounds more like torture than entertainment, like taking fat people on a strict diet and making them watch ads for their favorite calorie-packed food.

On top of that, I'm the sort of person that thinks sex is something you shouldn't have indiscriminately. I'm not saying you need to wait until you're married to someone (assuming that's even legal for your choice of someone), but that you should only have sex with people you feel a deep, personal connection to. It's a highly intimate endeavor, and if you don't connect with your partner on an emotional level, why are you willing to connect on a body fluid level? At the very least get to know this person for a while first; become friends so you can experience something a little better than primeval grunting. From my point of view, sex with random strangers, even if disease and pregnancy weren't issues, just isn't something appealing.

Now that's not to say that I don't approve of looking at tasteful nude pictures of members of the appropriate sex(es). However, that's different. It's not voyeuristic, it's a just an aesthetic appreciation for fine examples of the human form. When I look at a picture of a naked woman, I certainly don't imagine myself (or anyone else) having sex with her, I just like looking at her (assuming she's reasonably attractive by my standards). When I do have fantasies, they involve women, either real or imaginary, with whom I'm involved in an intimate relationship. Even in the consequence-free realm of the imagination, I'm not into casual sex. I know this may sound horribly boring to some of you, but doing otherwise removes the property that makes such activity special to me.
